Cedar Lake

The town of Cedar Lake Indiana, located in Lake County, is centered around the 784-acre lake of the same name.  The community started out as a popular vacation destination for wealthy Chicagoans.  At one time, hotels surrounded the entire lake.  I imagine a luxurious resort area catering to well-to-do families like the movie Dirty Dancing.

Summer cottages were built also, allowing mother and children to summer at the lake. Father would ride in by train from the big city on the weekends. The resort area changed in the 1940s though, when workers came up from the south to work at the booming steel mills during the war. They moved into the aged summer cottages and converted them to year-round living.

Some of the original cottages still exist today. Most have been demolished and larger homes built on the lots. In recent years, luxury housing has been developed on the lakefront. Today, the town has over 13,000 year-round residents.

Many water sport enthusiasts drive from near and far to also enjoy Cedar Lake (the largest natural lake in Northwest Indiana). The town definitely has a beach vacation destination feel in the summer, especially around the lake. Boating, water skiing, fishing, swimming, ice cream stands, good food, and music in the air will do that…

Fun Facts: The lake is currently 784 acres although 150 years ago it used to be about 400 acres larger. Today, it’s about 2 miles long and 1 mile wide. At its deepest, it is about 16 ft, although it averages around 8 feet.
