Valparaiso

Valparaiso Indiana, also known as Valpo, is the county seat of Porter County, with about 34,000 residents spread out along two zip codes. Part of the Valparaiso Moraine area, it was formed by glaciers pushing against the land and left small lakes and hills.

This city has an interesting past. It was originally purchased from the Potawatomi people by the US Government in the early 1800’s. The area very much followed the church and built what is now Valparaiso University to bring higher education and high faith together.

However, up until 1969, there were no black residents in Valpo. It was known as a sunset town, during a very unfortunite time in our NWI history. The Fair Housing Act of 1968 put laws into effect forbiding this practice and the city is mgaining in diversity.
