If you’re looking for a new place to play basketball, use the gym, or even throw an event, the Hammond Sportsplex & Community Center is great. The City of Hammond has undergone significant growth in recent years. With the addition of new commercial and residential development along with improvements to existing parks, the city is investing in its future, including a new, updated YMCA in the works.

Hammond’s newest recreational facility, The Hammond Sportsplex & Community Center, offers indoor basketball and volleyball courts, soccer fields, community rooms, a walking track, and more. Read on to learn more about this very popular facility.

What is the Hammond Sportsplex & Community Center?

The Sportsplex & Community Center is a new, 135,000 sq ft, multi-purpose facility located in Hammond, Indiana. As the name suggests, this facility is both a sports center AND a community center.

The Sportsplex showcases a variety of indoor sports courts and fields for community use, private rental, and Hammond sportsplex events. There’s also a free walking track overlooking the gym.  A spacious community room and multi-purpose rooms are available for community special events and private rentals.

The facility, built in 2018 on the site of the old Woodmar Mall on Indianapolis Blvd., is managed by the City of Hammond Parks and Recreation Department.

The Sportsplex Gymnasium Amenities

The Sportsplex hosts 20+ indoor-only sports fields and courts. They are used for open gym, scheduled community sports programs, practices, leagues and tournaments. Courts, and even the whole gymnasium, are available for private rental.

Who Can Use The Sportsplex & Community Center?

This impressive facility is open to the entire public, making it a new Region favorite for open gym basketball and volleyball, the walking track, and leagues for all ages. In fact, the Hammond Sportsplex is so popular that the city is already in the planning phase of an expansion just four years after the facility’s grand opening.

The Sportsplex also hosts many weekend sports tournaments bringing in out-of-state visitors to The Region. The Community Center events and room rentals are available to all, as well.

A valid ID and a medical waiver on file are required to play sports. Parents must sign a waiver for all children under 18 years old. Children under 12 at Open Gym must be accompanied by a parent.

Walking Track Hours

Please note that walking track hours may be closed on weekends if events are scheduled.

There is a fee for Open Gym and you must have a valid ID and waiver on file.

If you’re looking for some free outdoor volleyball sites, Wicker Memorial Park has three volleyball sand pits. They are first-come, first-served. Wicker Park is on Indianapolis Blvd., also, about 2 miles south of The Hammond Sportsplex.

Central Park in Griffith also has a couple sand volleyball courts, located on Broad St near just north of downtown.

Where Is The Hammond Sportsplex And Community Center?

The address is 6630 Indianapolis Boulevard, Hammond, Indiana 46320. For out-of-towners, this popular street is also know as Indy, The Boulevard, or 41. The facility is located on Indianapolis Blvd about 2 miles north of the 80/94 expressway. For those of us that have lived in The Region for a lifetime, it is at the site of the former Woodmar Mall.
